UNITY, Maine — A Clifton man was killed on Tuesday night when the pickup truck he was riding in struck a utility pole on Route 9, state police said.

Harold Fickett III, 20, was declared dead at the scene, while the driver and another passenger suffered injuries not considered life-threatening, Department of Public Safety spokesman Stephen McCausland said.

The other two occupants, Tyler Cherry, 17, of Swanville and Eric Bowen, 17, of Searsport, suffered injuries not considered life-threatening, McCausland said. Cherry was driving the pickup, he added.

The spokesman said the crash occurred around 9 p.m. A chocolate Labrador retriever named Josie ran off from the crash site but was later found, McCausland said.

Cherry and Bowen were both taken to a Belfast hospital for their injuries, while Bowen was later released and Cherry transported to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor.

Route 9 was shut down for several hours as crews investigated the crash. McCausland did not disclose whether alcohol or speed were factors nor whether charges will be filed.

The crash remains under investigation. McCausland said the pickup was owned by Cherry’s mother.
