SKOWHEGAN, Maine — A local man is facing sexual assault charges after an alleged assault of a 32-year-old woman earlier this month, police said.

John Jolly, 50, was arrested Tuesday and charged with gross sexual assault, a Class A offense, and unlawful sexual contact, a Class B crime, Skowhegan Police Chief Don Bolduc said.

Police were notified of the alleged assault, which had taken place on West Front Street, on Aug. 8, according to Bolduc.

After speaking with the victim and interviewing Jolly, police had enough probable cause to place Jolly under arrest, Bolduc said.

Jolly was transported to the Somerset County Jail, where bail was set at $5,000 cash or $50,000 surety.
