HAMPDEN, Maine — A Brewer woman who drove onto Route 202 going the wrong way Sunday night and died in a head-on collision has been identified, Hampden police Officer Mark Egan said Monday.

Cynthia Esty, 67, died at the scene, he said.

“Last night we had an elderly woman driving the wrong way on Route 202 and she collided with another vehicle that had four people in it, two adults and two children,” Egan said. “Two of the people in the vehicle were taken to the hospital to be checked out and seemed to be OK.

“The elderly woman … was pronounced dead at the scene,” the officer said of Esty.

Esty was driving a Saturn when she struck a Chevy Malibu driven by Tamra Shelly, 42, of Hampden.

The 6:30 p.m. crash occurred near the intersection of Route 202 and Coldbrook Road, and closed down a portion of the roadway for hours. Hampden police Officer Jeff Rice is handling the accident reconstruction investigation, and local police were assisted by Maine State Police and the Waldo County Sheriff’s Office.
