BATH, Maine — The U.S. Navy announced Wednesday that the USS John S. McCain, built at Bath Iron Works and damaged Aug. 21 in a collision with a tanker off the Straits of Malacca, will be repaired in Japan.
The Navy said it will heavy lift the Arleigh Burke-class destroyer (DDG 56) from Singapore to the U.S. Naval Ship Repair Facility-Japan Regional Maintenance Center in Yokosuka, Japan, Defense News reported.
The facility could complete the work at the lowest cost and most quickly return the ship to full service, according to the report.
Also damaged in a collision this summer was the USS Fitzgerald (DDG 62), another destroyer built at Bath Iron Works. The Navy announced in August that the Fitzgerald would be repaired by Huntington Ingalls Industries in Pascagoula, Mississippi.
