Jacob Thompson loves Christmas, and he’s defied the odds to enjoy more of them than doctors might have expected. He was diagnosed with Stage 4 High Risk Neuroblastoma in February of 2014 at the age of 5, Portland NBC affiliate WCSH reported, and now he’s 9 years old.

But recently his condition worsened, and just less than a month ago, his mother wrote, “Jacob was admitted to the Barbara Bush Children’s Hospital for the last time.”

“[H]is father, Roger, and myself have been told that we should be spending as much time as possible with him and we should start making arrangements for his passing,” mother Michelle Simard wrote in a post online. “It is expected Jacob may pass away within the month.”

But not before he gets one last Christmas. His family members will decorate his hospital room for the holiday next weekend, WCSH reported. Santa Claus will make an appearance and Jacob will get to open his Christmas presents one last time.

His mother and father are asking people in the community to mail cards and well wishes to their little boy.

“Just to show that people love and care for him and show their support,” father Roger Guay told the television station. “Any way to brighten his day would be a great benefit to him.”

According to WCSH, Christmas cards for Jacob can be mailed to: 22 Bramhall Street, Portland, Maine, 04102
