The six teams involved in the Maine Principals’ Association field hockey state championship games are going to have an extra week to prepare.
With cold, rain and heavy winds forecast across the state Saturday, the MPA announced on Thursday that it has postponed the state title games until Saturday, Nov. 3.
Those games also will be played at a different site as Husson University in Bangor, the original venue, is not available Nov. 3 because the Eagles have an Eastern Collegiate Football Conference home football game against Gallaudet scheduled at the Winkin Complex.
The state title games involve Skowhegan (17-0) and Biddeford (16-0-1) in Class A, Gardiner (16-1) and York (13-3-1) in Class B, and Winthrop (16-1) and Spruce Mountain of Jay (11-5-1) in Class C.
This is the second scheduling change for the MPA field hockey tournament as regional championship games originally slated for Tuesday were moved to Wednesday because of a rainy forecast.
The National Weather Service forecast for Bangor on Saturday is calling for snow likely before 11 a.m., then rain with a high near 41 degrees and a light northeast wind increasing to 8 to 13 mph in the morning.
Numerous schools had already moved their boys and girls soccer playoff games from Saturday to Friday in the hope of getting ahead of the weather.
According to published reports, the MPA Cross Country Committee is considering whether to postpone the state championship meets for Classes A, B and C, which are scheduled for Saturday at Troy Howard Middle School in Bangor.
Many Aroostook County schools already dealt with weather-related game postponements and changes after some areas received measurable snow Tuesday night.
