A Hartford man charged in the murder of his girlfriend made his first court appearance Friday.
Forty-six-year-old Rondon Athayde was arraigned and held without bond.
No evidence was presented, and the affidavit has been impounded at the request of the state.
Defense Attorney Jeffrey Wilson told the court he reserves the right for an independent autopsy.
The alleged victim, 41-year-old Ana Cordeiro, leaves behind two young children, girls ages 3 and 4, who were reportedly inside the home at the time of the incident. They are now in protective custody, police say.
The accused is the one who called 911 just after midnight Thursday to report Cordeiro was unresponsive, according to police.
Officials say that first responders tried and were unable to revive Cordeiro inside the home at the end of Bear Mountain Road.
Police say the couple is from Brazil. They had allegedly been living in that home for the past two years.
Neighbors say the couple was friendly and exchanged gifts and helped shovel snow.
Athayde is due back in court within the next two weeks.
