The couple found dead inside their mobile home in Richmond over the weekend died in a murder-suicide, authorities said Monday.

Niomi Mello, 37, was shot to death by her longtime boyfriend, 46-year-old Kirk Alexander Jr., at their Post Road home, according to Stephen McCausland, spokesman for the Maine Department of Public Safety. Alexander then turned the gun on himself.

McCausland said the shooting happened sometime late Friday night or early Saturday morning.

Mello and Alexander were found in the kitchen of their Post Road home by Mello’s 11-year-old son late Saturday morning. He ran to a nearby convenience store to seek help.

The boy is staying with his father.

Autopsies were completed Sunday at the Maine medical examiner’s office in Augusta.
