Because of a flood warning, the east and west parking lots behind the Pickering Square parking garage in downtown Bangor will be closed overnight Friday into Saturday.
City officials have issued a parking ban along the Kenduskeag Stream starting 11 p.m., according to the City of Bangor Facebook and Twitter pages.
“The walls down there are just over 17 feet high,” Eric Willett, public works director, said. “If we have a 2-foot storm surge the parking lots will be flooded.”
After the high tide Saturday around 10 a.m., the city’s public works department will evaluate the conditions and reopen the parking lots if possible, Willett said. In case of flooding, officials will wait until the water recedes.
Similar parking bans have been issued during the winter in case of storm surges and in the spring when ice jams cause flooding.
“We’re going to be planning for the worst and hoping for the best,” Willett said.
