More than half a century after his death, the city of Portland is taking steps to memorialize Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

A task force has come up with a location for a memorial site.

Members of the Sustainability and Transportation Committee are proposing an area on the Bayside Trail near Franklin Street for a memorial to King.

The site would include a large open space with seating and possibly a children’s play area.

“And I hope that the trail will be very interactive, for people who use it, for people who go to that part of town when they see it, that will remind them of what was done for this country to be what it is, especially now, more than ever we need a reminder that we are all same country, we are all in this boat together, to make it a better place, or we sink it,” Portland City Councilor Pious Ali said.

The city said it a ready to spend $100,000 on a memorial. The money came from the sale of some city-owned property. The city will be asking for public input about the memorial.
