Two firefighters have been injured after responding to a fire in St. George.

A fire destroyed a home in St. George, and the fire crews that are on scene are addressing hot spots, specifically around the garage where they say this entire fire started.

The home on Balsam Lane in the Tenants Harbor area of St. George quickly got away from them due to the narrow and icy roads, according to fire officials.

“It’s quite a long walk, and we have to lay a lot of hose. Water and manpower was an issue in the beginning of the fire,” Chief Michael Smith said.

The homeowners are OK and say a heater is to blame for the fire. Two firefighters were injured while responding, according to fire marshals.

“One firefighter fell down on the ice, and the other firefighter was in the building and had to be checked out for exhaustion,” Sgt. Joel Davis said.

Both firefighters were taken to the hospital and are now OK. Fire officials say it was a scary moment given the fact a Maine firefighter died just one week ago.

Fire officials say this fire also should remind residents about the proper use of heaters.

Fire crews say they are still going to be on scene a couple more hours addressing hotspots, and they say they wouldn’t be surprised if they are back here before the sun rises to continue their work.
