Saco Police Chief Raynald Demers and Deputy Police Chief Corey Huntress have been placed on administrative leave, though the reasons why have not been revealed.

Saco Mayor Marston Lovell confirmed Demers and Huntress were placed on leave Friday afternoon by City Administrator Kevin Sutherland.

Because it is a personnel matter, Lovell said he could not get into any specifics as to why the top two city police officers were placed on leave.

Deputy Chief Jack Clements will act as interim chief for the time being, he said.

The Saco City Council is expected to discuss the matter in executive session, meaning behind closed doors, during its March 25 meeting, Lovell said.

The mayor anticipates Sutherland will hire an outside person or agency to look into the matter.
