A multi-vehicle crash on the Maine Turnpike in Saco temporarily closed the northbound lanes Monday morning.

A southbound car that went out of control collided with a tractor-trailer on the turnpike before 8 a.m., according to Stephen McCausland, spokesman for the Maine Department of Public Safety. The truck then crossed the median and struck another car in the northbound lanes near mile 34 before both came to a rest off the highway, he said.

The crash brought northbound traffic to a standstill, backing it up as far as mile 31 in Biddeford during the morning commute. The northbound lanes were reopened before 9 a.m., though McCausland said it could take time for the backed up traffic to clear.

The driver of the second car sustained minor injuries, McCausland said.

He said the first car that struck the tractor-trailer did not stop, and he described it only as small and maroon.
