A dog died in a fire that damaged a single-family home on Stevens Avenue in Portland on Thursday.

The fire at 322 Stevens Ave. was reported at 1:37 p.m., and the first firefighters arrived within three minutes. They managed to prevent the fire at the two-story building from spreading to adjacent buildings and brought it under control within 30 minutes, according to a report from the Portland Fire Department.
The homeowner was not home at the time. Rescue workers attempted to resuscitate the dog but were unsuccessful. Stevens Avenue was closed between Montrose Avenue and Woodfords Street during the incident, according to the report.
The cause of the fire remains unknown.
