BROCKTON, Massachusetts — A Massachusetts man charged with beating his father to death with a dumbbell has been held without bail.
Stephen M. Walcott Jr., 42, was arraigned Tuesday on a murder charge in the death Monday night of Stephen M. Walcott Sr., 70, in his East Bridgewater home. Not guilty pleas were entered on his behalf.
The younger man went to his father’s home without calling ahead and the two began arguing, according to the police report. He punched his father before grabbing a dumbbell and hitting the older man in the back of his head, police said.
He drove away from the area and was arrested at his Brockton home a short time later, authorities said.
The younger man told police “that he killed his father because he is the devil,” according to the police report.
The victim’s daughter and suspect’s sister, Lisa Walcott, told The Enterprise that her brother suffers from bipolar disorder.
The younger Walcott’s attorney, James S. Murphy of Brockton, said he will request a mental health evaluation for his client to determine his mental state and whether there are criminal responsibility issues.
The homicide was the first in East Bridgewater since 1992.
