The Bangor branch of the Bureau of Motor Vehicles will move out of the Airport Mall and reopen at a new location at the end of January.

The Secretary of State’s office said Thursday that the branch will be closed through Jan. 27-28 and reopen on Jan. 31 at 396 Griffin Road, Suite 202.

The new branch, across Union Street from its current spot, will occupy part of the building that used to house the Bangor office of the state Department of Health and Human Services. The state agency relocated its Bangor office to a building at the corner of Maine Avenue and Hammond Street in 2019.

The new Bureau of Motor Vehicles branch location will come with a bigger lobby, allowing for social distancing and more natural light, and more parking, Secretary of State Shenna Bellows said.

The Bangor BMV has been in its current location for 25 years, and served 47,000 customers in 2021, making it the busiest branch in the state, Deputy Secretary of State and Bureau of Motor Vehicles head Cathie Curtis said.

“With this new space and more parking spaces we’ll be better able to serve those Mainers on everything from license renewals to road tests,” Curtis said.

The Bangor BMV will celebrate its new location with a ribbon cutting ceremony on Feb. 1.
