A Naples man died in Harrison on Saturday after he drove his snowmobile off the trail and into trees.
Daniel J. Hammond, 46, was riding with a group of three friends at 10:30 a.m. Saturday when the group stopped to cross the Cape Monday Road, according to Mark Latti, communications director for the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife. After two members of the group crossed the road, Hammond crossed with the final companion behind him.
After crossing the road, Hammond stayed on the trail briefly before driving off it and crashing into trees, Latti said.
Hammond was initially conscious, but died at the scene 20 minutes later. He was wearing a helmet and driving a 2022 Ski-Doo 850 Backcountry.
Hammond’s body will be examined by the state medical examiner at Hall Funeral Home in Casco.
