Police located a van containing a dog after a 44-year-old man allegedly stole it in Bangor on Tuesday morning, authorities said.

The owner of the van had stepped away from the vehicle while the dog was inside when Bertrand Cote, 44, of Bangor allegedly got in the van and drove away.

Penobscot County Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Bobbie Pelletier first heard a report of a stolen van at around 6:30 a.m. He was told the van had been stolen in close proximity to the sheriff’s office building on Hammond Street

Pelletier located the van in a nearby business parking lot, according to the sheriff’s office. Inside, he found Cote and the dog.

Pelletier and the Bangor police arrested Cote for theft of a motor vehicle and two active warrants.

The dog was not harmed, police said. Cote had also not damaged the vehicle after allegedly stealing it.
