SCARBOROUGH, Maine — It’s back to the drawing board Monday night for Costco in the plan to bring their first store to Maine.

Scarborough’s planning board rejected the wholesale retailers plan to build a location at the old Scarborough Downs.

The retail and wholesale building would have been over 160-thousand square feet, along with a gas station.

The planning board said that they want to see alternative plans for the layout of the buildings before agreeing to anything.

“I would like to see alternatives,” Scarborough Planning Board Chair Rachel Hendrickson said. “It’s possible after we see the alternatives we say, ‘Yup, you were right the first time,’ but I would like to see an alternative layout.”
