A man who was found carrying his severed arm around downtown Lewiston last month cut it off himself, a police investigation found.

After looking at hours of video footage and speaking with witnesses, it was determined that Abdiaziz Hussein, 25, cut off his arm by means of a meat grade band saw at AK Market, the Lewiston Sun Journal reported.

Two Lewiston public works employees came across Hussein carrying his arm around 9 a.m. on Jan. 21 on Maple Street, which runs parallel to the market. His arm was severed close to the shoulder, and the two applied a tourniquet to his arm before first responders arrived and rushed him to Central Maine Medical Center, the newspaper reported.

It was announced on Tuesday that the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration ended the agency’s investigation into the case because Hussein was not an employee at the market and it had no grounds to investigate.

AK Market sells a variety of home goods, dry foods and halal meat.
