A large retail building by the Bangor Mall will gain its first permanent tenant in almost four years in April when a national discount furniture chain moves in.

Bob’s Discount Furniture will open its Bangor Mall Boulevard store April 8, said spokesperson Nichole Keough. It will move into a building that most recently housed Bangor’s Toys “R” Us location until the bankrupt chain shut down in 2018.

The furniture franchise taking the toy store’s place has 150 locations in 24 states, Keough said. Bob’s sells discounted bedroom and living room furniture, mattresses and home decor, according to its website. Signs affixed to the Bangor Mall Boulevard building’s windows on Thursday advertised that the chain is hiring.

Its next-nearest location is in Scarborough.

Bob’s is the first full-time tenant to move into the former Toys “R” Us building since Waterstone Properties Group, a Needham, Massachusetts-based real estate firm, bought the building last June.

The seven-acre plot was assessed at $3.7 million, $1.7 million for its lot size and $2 million for the building, according to Bangor’s fiscal year 2022 assessment.

Toys “R” Us declared bankruptcy in September 2017 and closed its Maine locations in 2018.

The building at 6 Bangor Mall Boulevard has hosted a seasonal Halloween costume store in the fall and once housed a Bed Bath & Beyond outlet that has since relocated.
