Two young girls were seriously injured after a snowmobile crash in New Portland on Friday afternoon.

The 9- and 10-year-old girls, whose names were not released, were snowmobiling on family property when they lost control of the 1988 Ski-Doo vehicle they were riding on at around 12:10 p.m. and crashed into a stand of trees, according to Mark Latti, a spokesperson for the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife.

Neither of the children were wearing a helmet at the time of the crash, and suffered from severe trauma to their head, chest and back.,

The girls were taken to Franklin Memorial Hospital in Farmington, and then taken by LifeFlight to the Maine Medical Center in Portland, according to Latti.

The circumstances of the crash are under investigation.
