A 16-year-old boy drowned Sunday afternoon in a Hancock County lake.
The boy was swimming with his brother, cousins and their friends at the Deer Lake Campground in T34 MD BPP about 4 p.m. when he went under the water and never resurfaced, according to Mark Latti, a spokesperson for the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife.
His brother yelled to their aunt when he thought his brother was having a medical event.
The boy’s family and others rushed into the water to rescue him, but they were unable to find him, Latti said late Sunday night. The area where he went under has a steep drop off.
A Maine Warden Service diver later found the boy’s body about 60 feet from shore and in seven feet of water.
No additional information was released.
T34 MD BPP is northeast of Aurora.
