A New Gloucester man died Wednesday after he was critically injured in a North Yarmouth crash.

Dustin Pepin, 33, was riding a 2023 Kawasaki motorcycle north on Gray Road, near the Mill Road intersection, about 3:31 p.m. when he attempted to pass a 2004 Ford Econoline van driven by 74-year-old John Rose of Portland, according to Capt. Kerry Joyce of the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office.

Pepin clipped the front driver’s side of the Econoline, causing his motorcycle to go onto its side and skid into the opposite lane, Joyce said Wednesday evening.

Pepin then came off the bike and continued to skid in the opposite lane, where he was run over by a 2014 Volkswagen Golf driven by 60-year-old Lisa Ruhman of Yarmouth, according to Joyce.

Firefighters had to jack the Golf to free Pepin.

Pepin, who was wearing a helmet, was taken to Maine Medical Center in Portland, where he later succumbed to his injuries around 4 p.m., Joyce said.

Speed and impaired driving aren’t considered factors in the crash, which remains under investigation.
