A Lubec man has pleaded guilty to killing his girlfriend.

Paul DeForest, 67, was accused of shooting and killing 58-year-old Eva Cox in the home they shared on Jim’s Head Road in Lubec in January 2022, according to the Portland Press Herald.

Her body was found inside the trunk of a car nearby.

DeForest was later arrested in Warrenton, Virginia, and extradited back to Maine.

A witness to the crime reportedly told police that DeForest said, “Why did she have to push my buttons, she knew I loved her,” according to the Press Herald.

DeForest will be sentenced on Sept. 19.
