A man allegedly kidnapped a woman at a South Portland motel early Tuesday morning.

Kristofer Wingate, 40, faces charges of kidnapping, creating a police standoff and being a fugitive from justice, according to Shara Dee, a spokesperson for the city of South Portland.

Wingate was wanted on a full extradition warrant out of Texas for failure to appear and on weapons charges.

While armed with a gun, Wingate allegedly refused to let a woman leave a room at the Pine Haven Motel on Main Street about 1 a.m.

A SWAT team and crisis negotiators were dispatched to the motel, where after four hours Wingate was convinced to let the woman go, according to Dee. The woman was taken to a nearby hospital for evaluation.

Negotiators spent the next four hours unsuccessfully trying to convince Wingate to leave the room, Dee said Tuesday.

The SWAT team entered the room and “forcibly removed” Wingate, who was then taken to a nearby hospital, according to Dee.

A search of the room turned up a handgun.
