A Penobscot County sheriff’s deputy was injured Tuesday morning when a tractor-trailer crashed on Interstate 395 near Wilson Street in Brewer.

Kristofer Higgins, 41, of Baileyville was driving the tractor-trailer carrying a load of diesel fuel on the westbound on-ramp about 8 a.m. when he rolled over at a turn, according to Shannon Moss, a spokesperson for the Maine Department of Public Safety.

The tractor-trailer took out the center portion of the guardrail and struck a Penobscot County Sheriff’s Office cruiser driven by Sgt. Gary Decker, Moss said Tuesday afternoon.

Decker was taken to Northern Light Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor, where he was treated for injuries not considered life-threatening.

Higgins was taken to the same hospital with minor injuries.

Some diesel fuel was spilled during the crash, and officials from the Maine Department of Environmental Protection were at the scene cleaning it up.

The crash closed the westbound on-ramp from Wilson Street and the eastbound off-ramp onto Wilson Street.

Moss said the closure was expected to last for several hours.
