The Lewiston High School Blue Devils claimed their hockey program’s 25th state Class A title and first since 2020 with a 5-0 win over Bangor High School on Saturday at the Cross Insurance Arena in Portland.
It was Bangor’s first appearance in a state championship game since the inception of the program in the 1985-86 season.
Aizyk Laliberte had a hat trick with three power play goals and Gabe Pomerleau made 21 saves for Lewiston, which concluded a 17-4 season while Bangor wound up 14-6-1.
Hayden Brown scored just 1:54 into the game to supply the Blue Devils with the only goal they were to need.
Austin Landry and Andrew Theriault picked up assists.
Laliberte expanded the lead with the only goal of the second period as he swept home the rebound of a Cam Plourde shot.
Bangor had a goal waved off early in the third period that would have made it 2-1 because it was ruled that the puck hadn’t completely crossed the goal line.
“We lost some momentum after they waved it off,” said Bangor coach Quinn Paradis.
“We didn’t play our best. We were a little nervous at the beginning,” said Paradis, who felt the nerves impacted their focus. “Their goalie played very, very well.”
Laliberte sewed up the win with a pair of third-period power play goals, and Cody Dionne had the other just after he emerged from the penalty box.
Cody McCue finished with 23 saves for the Rams.
The two teams had split regular season meetings with Lewiston earning a 4-3 home win and Bangor posting a 3-0 victory at Sawyer Arena in Bangor.
