A University of Maine student was struck by a university vehicle on the Orono campus Friday morning.

The crash happened around 9:24 a.m. on Long Road near Jenness Hall.

Emergency personnel transported the graduate student, whose name was not released, to a local hospital where they are being treated for minor injuries, UMaine said in a statement. The student’s family was notified. Few details about the crash were available Friday, though an investigation is underway.

“Our thoughts are with the student and their family,” the university said.

University of Maine Police is investigating the crash with help from the Penobscot County Sheriff’s Office crash reconstruction unit, the university said.

The university said the vehicle was a Chevrolet Express van that a university employee was operating. WABI reported that it was a UMaine Printing and Mailing Services van.

The area where the crash happened on Long Road was clear Friday afternoon. Firefighters and police from Orono, UMaine police, University Volunteer Ambulance Corps and the sheriff’s office responded to the crash earlier in the day.

The university is encouraging any witnesses to the incident to contact Lt. Noel Santiago at noel.santiago@maine.edu.
