A suspect was taken into custody Monday afternoon after a fire erupted at a home on Stanley Mountain Road in Mount Desert.
Chief David Kerns of the Mount Desert Police Department confirmed that a suspect had been taken into custody, but he referred all other questions about the case to the state fire marshal’s office, which was investigating the blaze.
Shannon Moss, spokesperson for Maine Department of Public Safety, confirmed Monday evening that an investigator with the fire marshal’s office was at the scene but said other information was not yet available.
The house, at the far end of Stanley Mountain Road from Route 198, was significantly damaged in the fire, but some of it may be salvageable, according to Mount Desert Fire Chief Mike Bender. He said it took about two and a half hours for firefighters from area towns to contain and then extinguish the blaze.
Bender said no one was at the fire scene when the first firefighters arrived a few minutes after 2:15 p.m., when it was reported. He said that firefighters had to run a hose half a mile up Stanley Mountain Road — which has a dead-end — from Route 198 to fight the fire.
Bender directed other questions about possible causes to the fire marshal’s office.
Stanley Mountain Road was closed to traffic during the fire. Route 198 by Abel’s Lobster, which is directly opposite Stanley Mountain Road, was reduced to one alternating lane of traffic while firefighters battled the blaze.
