Mainers glancing up at the night sky Friday were amazed to see the vibrant colors of the Northern Lights.

The aurora borealis was brought on by a significant solar storm and was visible across the northern United States Friday night.

There was less to view Saturday evening and early Sunday morning as solar storm activity lingered in the atmosphere.

The natural phenomenon can actually appear more vivid through a camera lens, which some Mainers took full advantage of. Check out these stunning photos from last night’s display.
