A Portland man was arrested Friday after police say he broke out of the back of a police cruiser and fled on foot after being detained.
Samuel James Knights, 26, of Portland is being held without bail on multiple charges, including aggravated criminal mischief, methamphetamine possession, and fleeing arrest.
Police received a report of a suspicious person in a Big Apple parking lot in Naples just before 1 p.m. Friday, according to a release by Cumberland County Sheriff Sgt. Joseph Dyar.
Responding officers arrived on scene and detained Knights, whose Budget Rental Truck was outside the rental window with the box of the truck removed. Police also located a U-Haul trailer that was suspected to be taken from a rental location in New Hampshire.
While officers were investigating, Knights broke out of the backseat of a police cruiser and attempted to escape on foot, Dyar said. He was quickly taken back into custody.
Knights is being held at the Cumberland County Jail. Dyar said more charges against Knights are likely pending further investigation.
