Scarborough's Emerson Flaker, shown receiving a fourth place medal for her performance in the 400 meter dash at the New England outdoor track and field championships at Cameron Stadium in Bangor last year, has been named 2024 Maine Gatorade girls track and field player of the year.

Emerson Flaker of Scarborough High School made her mark at the Class A state track meet this June, winning the 100, 200, and 400-meter dashes outright, and anchoring the Red Storm’s gold-winning 4×400-meter relay.

One week later, Flaker placed top 7 in the 200-meter and 400-meter dashes at New Englands, and the next weekend placed ninth in the 400-meter dash at the Adidas Outdoor Nationals.

The 5-foot-7 rising senior’s latest achievement came on Tuesday, becoming Scarborough’s first ever Maine Gatorade Girls Track & Field Player of the Year.

“Emerson is a dedicated athlete who’s put in the time to become the accomplished runner that she is,” Scarborough head coach Denise Curry said. “She always gets her workouts in.”

Flaker was also a member of Scarborough’s 4×100-meter relay team that set the all-time Maine state record in 2023, and was the age 13-14 pentathlon winner at the USATF National Junior Olympic Track and Field Championships in 2021.

She joins recent Gatorade Maine Girls Track & Field Players of the Year Ruth White of Orono (2023), Anna Connors of Bangor (2022) and Victoria Bossong of Cheverus (2020-21), among the state’s list of memorable track athletes.
