Seven “haves” — summer people “from away” who have summer homes in Northeast Harbor — apparently don’t want housing for year-round hourly workers (the “have nots”) sullying their exclusive Northeast Harbor neighborhood? A classic case of “Not in My Backyard” (NIMBY).
So what if those hourly-wage workers have to commute from sometimes great distances because they can’t afford to live on MDI — as long as they show up each morning to cook, clean, deliver, garden, police and protect, and sundry other services to keep those summer people and their summer homes safe and maintained. Both while the summer residents are in Maine (three or four months a year?) and protect those properties from vandalism, fire, and other vagaries when those summer people go home for the rest of the year!
Talk about effrontery!
