The University of Maine is selling the Hutchinson Center in Belfast to a local church. Several groups have requested the selection be reconsidered because it’s going to a group that will serve such a small segment of the general population. I think we’re missing another salient point about this transaction.

The church’s offer was for $1 million. Apparently, it’s not like they were in the midst of a fundraising campaign to build a new church; they seemingly just had this money lying around doing nothing. If churches have a million buckaroos sitting around gathering dust, then I say it’s high time we eliminated the tax exemption for churches.
