Police shot a man early Thursday morning during an incident on an Interstate 95 bridge connecting Maine and New Hampshire.
The man, whose identity hasn’t been released, allegedly killed a woman in Troy, New Hampshire, overnight before driving to the Piscataqua River Bridge, according to the New Hampshire attorney general’s office.
The Piscataqua River Bridge connects Portsmouth, New Hampshire, to Kittery, Maine. Between 70,000 and 80,000 vehicles use the bridge daily, with higher traffic volumes during peak periods, according to Paul Merrill, a spokesperson for the Maine Department of Transportation.
He was shot and killed during an engagement with police. The Maine attorney general’s office is investigating the officer-involved shooting. Neither the Maine nor New Hampshire attorney general’s office provided additional details when reached Thursday.
New Hampshire-based News 9 crew said they heard what sounded like gunshots on the bridge around 4:50 a.m.
Police also found an 8-year-old child had been fatally shot inside the man’s vehicle, the New Hampshire attorney general’s office said Thursday morning.
The shooting remains under investigation.
Northbound traffic from New Hampshire was completely blocked, while southbound traffic was being diverted at exit 2, according to Shannon Moss, a spokesperson for the Maine Department of Public Safety.
Traffic reopened in both directions after 9:30 a.m.
