Schooner Landing restaurant in Damariscotta was destroyed in an overnight fire.

The Damariscotta Fire Department was called to the waterfront building at about 3 a.m. Sunday, Fire Chief John Roberts said. Five other departments and a strike team — individual firefighters from different departments — assisted in putting out the blaze, which took several hours, he said.

Roberts said the state fire marshal’s office is investigating to determine the cause of the fire.

Firefighters were able to keep the fire from spreading to other structures. The building sits next to a marina, and Roberts said some kayaks were fire damaged.

Schooner Landing restaurant sat on a pier overlooking the Damariscotta River. A wharf was built at the site in the 1700s and was later used to transfer cargo to seagoing ships, according to the Schooner Landing website.
