A plane crashed as it was landing at the municipal airport in Stonington on Friday afternoon, according to local Fire Chief Steve Rittmeyer.

The pilot and a single passenger were not injured and were able to walk away from the crash, Rittmeyer said. It was reported just after 2 p.m.

While the Federal Aviation Administration is investigating the cause of the crash, Rittmeyer said the plane reportedly had a problem with its landing gear.

The crash blocked the airport’s 2,100-foot runway for the rest of Friday afternoon and into the evening, according to the fire chief.
