In a column published on Oct. 15, Ron Sweet pondered why 45 percent of the country supports former President Donald Trump. This was answered the next day by opinion letter writer Dean Curtis and opinion columnist Laura Washington. While expressing diametrically different views, both answered the question. Most Americans want a country where fairness prevails. Most Americans want their leaders to be authentic.

As Curtis points out, the media apparently edited a response by Trump’s opponent making her appear more eloquent. Washington points out that Trump’s message has never changed. Love him or hate him, he is not a phony. His opponent has had difficulty convincing voters what she stands for. Many Americans are weary of disingenuous and phony politicians.

Sweet might consider asking one of the 45 percent why they support the former president.
