A Portland man has been arrested after a Monday night shooting left one person dead.

Omar Abd Elkader, 21, was charged with murder, according to Brad Nadeau, a spokesperson for the Portland Police Department.

Elkader allegedly shot 31-year-old Edgar Cando of Portland multiple times near Portland and Alder streets, not far from Dyer’s Variety Store, Nadeau said Tuesday morning.

Cando was taken to Maine Medical Center, where he succumbed to his injuries.

Elkader is being held at the Cumberland County Jail.
