Stephen King on Thursday said he is leaving the social media platform X, formerly Twitter, because the atmosphere has become too toxic.

“I’m leaving Twitter. Tried to stay,” the horror author and Maine icon said in a post on X.

King said his followers can find him on Threads, the Twitter-like platform owned by Facebook and Instagram’s parent company Meta.

King has been an outspoken critic of X’s owner Elon Musk, whose overhaul of the company to allow greater freedom of speech has led to accusations of a rise in hate speech.
