ORONO, ME – Quinnipiac University rode 20 points from 6-foot-3 sophomore forward Anna Foley to a 61-53 win over the University of Maine at the newly-named Skip Chappelle Court in the Memorial Gymnasium on Sunday.
Quinnipiac improved to 5-0 on the season with the victory.
It was UMaine’s third straight loss, dropping the Black Bears to 2-4 on the season. Their home court was named for former UMaine men’s basketball player and coach Skip Chappelle earlier in the day.
Foley shot 8-for-13 from the floor including a pair of 3-pointers and grabbed 8 rebounds while Jackie Grisdale added 11 points and 6 rebounds for the Bobcats.
Quinnipiac led by as many as 14 points in the first half as UMaine struggled offensively, shooting 33 percent from the floor for the game including 7-for-32 on three-pointers. The Black Bears eventually heated up, scoring the final 5 points of the half to trail 36-27 at intermission.
UMaine came out in the second half and slowly chipped away at the deficit, pulling within two-points multiple times in the fourth quarter before Quinnipiac iced the game with free throws down the stretch.
Junior guard Jaycie Christopher led the Black Bears with 13 points, three rebounds and a block while graduate student forward Caroline Bornemann had a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Christopher had a team-high nine points in the opening half on 3-for-3 shooting, all of which were three-pointers.
Junior guard Sarah Talon finished with 10 points and 8 rebounds for UMaine which next plays Tuesday at 7 p.m. at Stonehill College.
