A record number of voters throughout Maine cast ballots in this year’s presidential election.
A total of 842,447 people voted in both the presidential and U.S. Senate races in Maine, according to the Sun Journal.
Secretary of State Shenna Bellows said this was the most votes cast in the state’s history.
According to the United States Election Assistance Commission, in the 2020 presidential race, 822,534 Maine voters cast ballots, meaning there were almost 20,000 more votes cast this year.
The official numbers for the voter turnout rate will be released sometime in the winter.
Nationwide, more than 153 million ballots have been counted in this year’s presidential race.
Correction: An earlier version of this report misstated the approximate difference in votes between the 2020 and 2024 presidential elections.
