Administrators of Camden Hills Regional School have hired pest control professionals after the discovery of a bed bug in a classroom last week, according to the Midcoast Villager.
The pest control workers then used dogs to find evidence of the insects in two small conference rooms, resulting in furniture being removed and the planned application of pesticides in those rooms this week, Principal Jen Curtis said in a notice to parents over the weekend, the Villager reported. The rooms will remain closed until the treatment is complete on Wednesday.
“I am pleased to report that no classrooms or common areas were affected,” Curtis said.
While bed bugs are not known to spread disease, their bites cause itching and their presence can be emotionally distressing for people. An infestation can be difficult to eradicate if it’s not promptly addressed.
According to the Villager, Curtis said in an informational meeting posted on YouTube that the school is adopting protocols for monitoring and inspecting the school for bed bugs through the remainder of the school year.
