Congratulations to David Farmer for his excellent insightful column in the Bangor Daily News on gun violence and why we cannot stop it or find an adequate solution. The problem is staring us in the face: We endorse violence. I think we have too many lethal weapons in our country, and it’s self-righteousness that makes this our alleged constitutional right to own and carry weapons of lethal destruction.

It is no longer about having a hunting weapon or a gun for protection. We now have to stockpile an arsenal of weapons in our homes just in case we are threatened from unseen forces. Another tragedy is that we now ship our surplus assault weapons to Haiti to arm their street gangs in the fight against their law enforcement personnel. As Farmer asks: Are we ready to look in the mirror and protect us from ourselves?
