A man was badly injured Wednesday after a car he was driving south on Route 1 in Northport collided with a tractor-trailer heading in the opposite direction, ejecting him from the vehicle.

The crash, which was reported shortly before 10:30 a.m., closed Route 1 in the area of the Northport-Belfast line for several hours.

It happened when Cody Arsenault, 31, who was driving a 2006 Subaru Outback southbound, allegedly crossed into the opposite lane to pass a vehicle that had slowed down to make a righthand turn, according to Lt. Cody Laite of the Waldo County Sheriff’s Office.

Arsenault’s vehicle then collided head-on with a 2024 Freightliner truck with an enclosed semi-trailer that was heading north, Laite said. The truck, which belonged to Andersen Windows & Doors, was driven by Alejandro Sicaju, 51.

Police did not say where each man lives.

Arsenault suffered life-threatening injuries after he was ejected from the car. He was transported from the crash site by an ambulance and later flown by Life Flight of Maine helicopter for additional medical treatment, Laite said.

Sicaju was taken to the MaineHealth Waldo Hospital in Belfast with minor injuries.

Numerous police, fire and rescue agencies assisted at the crash site.
