Officials said 11 children were taken to the hospital following a medical incident at a Scarborough school.

Multiple crews responded to the Wentworth School on Quentin Drive around 10 a.m. Thursday after getting reports about a possible gas leak and children feeling ill. The school was evacuated.

Emergency crews arrived within minutes and started treating those students.

The Scarborough Fire Department said the incident was upgraded to a mass causality event, which enables them to call for additional aid.

Officials said 11 students were taken to area hospitals. Their conditions are not known at this time. However, according to the Scarborough fire chief, all the injuries are considered minor.

School officials said more than 100 students were on a stage in the cafeteria rehearsing for a concert when one student passed out. Shortly after, multiple students reported being in respiratory distress.

Firefighters conducted tests in the building and their meters found no evidence of a gas leak. There were no reports of a gas smell either.

The school does have fire and carbon monoxide detectors.

The cause of the medical incident is under investigation.

Officials said students and staff have been allowed to return to the school.

Pavithra Brasad, who has a daughter in third grade at the Wentworth School, said she’s worried about her daughter and all the other students.

“I was just at the library with my daughter, and I got the information. So, I’m here just to check in [on] my daughter [to see] if she is OK,” Brasad said. “I’m really nervous, and I’m worried. I just want everyone to be safe.”

Wentworth has more than 100 staff members and serves approximately 700 students in grades 3-5.

The Wentworth School was built in 2014.
