A homeless man in Ellsworth is facing multiple charges after he allegedly set fire to another man’s tent in the middle of the night.
Steven M. Kane, 33, has been charged with arson and aggravated attempted assault as a result of the fire, according to the Ellsworth Police Department.
The incident was reported to police at 2:15 a.m. on Friday, April 11, police said. A man called 911 to say his tent had been lit on fire while he was inside it.
A small area of the tent, which was in the woods off High Street, was burned but the man inside put the fire out and was not injured, police said. Officers responded to the scene and, after about an hour, found Kane hiding in the woods nearby. Kane was intoxicated but also not injured, they said.
This incident remains under investigation and more charges are possible, police said. The Maine state fire marshal’s office is assisting with the investigation.
