A judge assigned to the federal lawsuit against the Maine Department of Education has recused himself from the case.
In the suit, the U.S. Justice Department says Maine is violating Title IX by allowing transgender athletes to play in girls’ sports.
Maine officials, including Gov. Janet Mills and Attorney General Aaron Frey, refute the claims and say Maine is following state and federal law.
Judge John Nivison recused himself Friday, though he did not list a reason why.
The case has now been assigned to Judge Stacey Neumann.
