If you encounter Lincoln’s police officers, don’t forget to smile. You’re on camera.

The Lincoln Police Department has been “fully equipped” with body cameras, Police Chief Lee Miller announced Wednesday.

Miller said it’s been a monthslong effort by his department, the Town Council and town officials.

“Their commitment to transparency, accountability, and officer safety made this possible,” Miller said.

These cameras include a number of features to ensure the most critical situations an officer encounters are all recorded. Whenever officers unholster their handguns, activate their stun guns or turn on their emergency lights, the cameras begin recording, according to Miller.

“These cameras are more than just equipment.  They help ensure accurate accounts of interactions, protect both our officers and the public, and support professionalism in every call we respond to,” Miller said.

Additionally, an officer can request another person to watch the camera feed live as “another tool for our officer’s safety,” Miller said.
